“Kiss him!” That’s what someone yelled out at the ceremony after Michael + Kevin said, “I do”. This wasn’t just a celebration for M + K, it was a celebration for love itself. For the right to love, to love who you want, to be proudly and openly in love. During the reception Kevin addressed the room and opened with “My husband and I…” and the room erupted in applause. That’s what this whole day was; an eruption of pure joy.
It’s obvious M + K knew how much this day meant, not just to themselves but to their community and the world. Kevin’s uncle was there to officiate and during the ceremony and took the time to explain why this was so important. He talked about the Supreme Court ruling to make same sex marriage legal. Even during one of the toasts someone mentioned how when they met Kevin back in the 90s this marriage would not have been recognized by the government. But it’s not the 90s anymore, and times have changed for the better. There’s still work to be done, but this love is a victory. This love is a flag in the ground. A vibrant rainbow-colored flag declaring, “We’re in love, we’re happy, we’re married.”.
And M + K are in love, and they are happy. I mean on one of their first dates K was running the Boston Marathon. M agreed to come to the after-party and before K arrived, M met his entire family. He took shots with them and got the party going. By the time K got there his whole family was already enamored with M. And when it came time to pick a venue they based it off of which venue served M’s favorite soup: French onion. If true love isn’t picking a wedding venue based on soup choice I don’t know what is.
So when it came time to edit this film, I knew it was going to be different. This wasn’t just a love story, it was a story about love. We added clips from that Supreme Court ruling and the celebration that ensued because when M + K made their vows and walked down that aisle hand in hand it wasn’t just their guests who were cheering. And in the future, when this film is just ones + zeroes stored in the cloud the message will still be loud and clear, “We’re in love, we’re happy, we’re married.” And then he’ll kiss him and the world will erupt once more.
