Our first date started like any other; dinner and drinks with small talk about likes, dislikes, future goals, a couple jokes to make sure he had a good sense of humor, the usual. After Justin laughed at my jokes and made a few of his own (he passed the sense of humor test with flying colors) he mentioned he was trying to eat healthier. I was excited to hear this and happened to have some homemade kale chips that were healthy and delicious so I offered him some. He took one small bite and immediately put the chips down. I have to say, I was a little offended. I asked if he liked them, expecting an enthusiastic "yes!", and instead he told me they were too spicy for him which was odd because there was absolutely no spice in these delicious snacks. He started to act slightly agitated and began to chug multiple glasses of water explaining that the chips were just too spicy, err "thpithey" if I had to try and iterate the way he was pronouncing the word "spicy" because his tongue was swelling out of his mouth and his throat was closing! The worst thing that could possibly happen on a first date was happening: I poisoned my date! Ok, I didn't poison him but he was having a severe allergic reaction to the cashew sauce I put on my kale chips. Whoops! Thankfully, I lived minutes away from a hospital. We jumped in my car, I ran a few red lights, went down the wrong way on one-way street, and got Justin safely to a hospital where we both spent the night. He was given two epinephrin shots, and a breathing apparatus until his throat and tongue went back down and his breathing was normal. That night Justin said he fell in love with me. That night I decided I was going to start screening people's allergies before offering them food. Six months later, he proposed. And now I am married to the love of my life because of one little cashew.
