Jackie + Greg met St. Louis when they were each training to be cardiologists. According to Greg, he may have noticed her first. This is the part in the story where Jackie would laugh and say “Of course he did. With his fine ass face”. They laugh and Jackie continues, “We were friends but I didn’t have time for him. But when I met him I said, ‘If you were my man you wouldn't be leaving the house smelling this good’”. They seem to have conflicting stories from how they remember it from there: he says their first date was to Whole Foods, she disagrees. She says their first date was when she asked him out to coffee. The two of them laugh and banter as they recount the beginning of their story and it could not be a better lead up to understand their playful, sharp-witted, and loving dynamic.
Greg planned to propose to Jackie on Valentine’s Day in New York City. They each had a “golden weekend”, a term people in the medical field refer to as having three days off in a row. He had hired a videographer to meet them on the 108th floor of the Empire State Building. His plan was to recreate a scene from Sleepless in Seattle as he proposed. But, the evening didn’t go as planned. They had gone out for drinks and were running late and when Jackie didn’t quite understand what the hurry was, Greg had no choice but to fess up. On the outside it might seem like a “ruined proposal” but I think it's so emblematic of how Jackie and Greg can bounce back from anything, as long as they’re together. They are the kind of people that are easy to be around because they laugh easily and welcome you into their circle easily and I like to imagine even something as big as proposing was the only thing that mattered to them. The journey of how we got there is just that, the journey.
When Jackie + Greg described their vision for their wedding, they said that they “love the lightness of champagne but also want the smokiness and power of a bourbon-rich old fashioned”. I think they were in turn describing themselves and the layers of who they are. Two cardiologists getting married at a mansion in Connecticut complete with fireworks, a nightclub, and a speakeasy. They are sophisticated and cultured and they are wild and uninhibited. They come from many cultures - Greg is Nigerian and his parents come from the Edo and Yoruba tribes while Jackie is Portuguese and Cape Verdean. They are mutli-faceted people and capturing the complexity and beauty of that was something that was really important to us.
This teaser took inspiration from iconic 90s R&B music videos like Dru Hill’s "These Are The Times" and Biggie’s "Hypnotize" and the way they weave cinematic storytelling with music video elements in a way that makes them more than the sum of their parts. There’s also a nod to classic 90s music video elements, like ones you see in Brandy’s “I Wanna Be Down” - a phone call that takes us into our couple’s relationship. We wanted this film to be refined and elegant, but with a distinct sense of swagger. And just as those music videos are more than the sum of their parts, so are we. We can be many different things that make up a whole and that is something to be celebrated.
