I was filming a commercial for a local bank where Heather was working as a teller. It took a few bits of encouragement (and a tip that she was single) from employees at the bank for me to gain the courage to ask her out. The courage wasn't enough to stop me from stuttering and being awkward (I gave her my business card at the end of our conversation, like "real smooth, Ephraim...real smooth."), but coffee was agreed to and numbers were exchanged! Fast-forward 6 years, we went on their first international trip together to Scotland. Heather's favorite classical duo (The Piano Guys) had filmed a music video at Eilean Donan Castle, which put it on our radar to visit while we were in the Highlands. I knew the trip would be the perfect chance, so I began preparing my proposal. After contacting the castle about proposal ideas, they informed me that a secret chamber (not normally accessible to guests) would be the perfect spot for the surprise. Along with arranging for champagne and candles to be delivered and placed in the chamber in advance of our arrival, I also made a fake website describing old Scottish castles and the legends of secret areas contained within them (it's still live! www.beneathancienthalls.com if you want to check it out). When read in order, the first letter of each castle name on the list spells out "Heather Will You Marry Me". Just to be risky, I showed it to Heather months before the actual trip, but she never caught on! We both have a passion for hiking and the outdoors, so there was no doubt in our minds that we both wanted to get married under the ancient canopy of the Sequoias. The day of the elopement was just perfect, and the forest atop the mountain will forever hold a sacred place in our hearts. No camera can ever fully capture the feeling of just how massive the trees are there. It was such a breathtaking and humbling experience to walk among them hand-in-hand with the most beautiful woman I have ever seen (in the most gorgeous dress I have ever seen).
