How they met: "We met in our Junior year of High School in 2009 through a mutual friend’s birthday party. We ended up connecting through Facebook and found we had a good amount of mutual friends even though we went to different high schools. We got together during high school football games since I was on the dance team and about a month after meeting he asked me out! We dated through high school and college, up until now. He attended the University of Oregon and I attended community college then UC San Diego. You may ask, was it hard having a long distance relationship? Yes it was super hard, we were immature and fought a lot but it’s been smooth sailing for a long time now. We graduated in 2015/2016 and it’s been a total of 11 years of being together. Kinda crazy! We’ve been through a lot both inside and outside of our relationship and it’s allowed us to grow together."
How the proposal happened: "The proposal happened in November 2019 on Kauai, HI. It was a surprise proposal on my end that I’m sure took a lot of time, effort, and collaboration with family and friends to get done. On the first night we got to our family friend’s/Officiant’s house Ryan decided to propose. He had been freaking out the entire flight (TSA almost spoiled the ring since it was in his personal item) and just wanted to get it done and over with. I had a bit of an idea as to what was going on because Mary Bea, our officiant, had told me to change into something nice for dinner. Who says that without raising alarm am I right?? So I texted my mom and said, “mom, am I getting proposed to right now?” And her response was “I’m not sure what you’re talking about sweetie!” And I was like lol, ok so that’s a yes. I didn’t focus on it too much and just got ready, I didn’t want to get my hopes up and be disappointed if he didn’t.
Right around sunset, after the rain had just about let up, we went up to “the farm” this vast grassy area surrounded by tropical flowers where there was a pile of flowers waiting at the end of the field. Ryan and I walked towards the end where the flowers are and he goofily goes “woah what’s that!” And picked up the flowers. Then we both blacked out, neither of us can hardly remember what he said when he proposed. But I of course said yes and we enjoyed the rest of our vacation as an engaged couple!"
About the Couple: "Ryan and I are more home bodies, we value the time we spend with family and friends more so than getting out there every weekend. It’s a blessing and a curse living so close to family. Not that we don’t get out, we’re just usually with a group of friends when we do! We definitely have a large list of places we plan to visit, but with wedding planning, career goals, and finances we have had to put a bit of a hold on that. If we’re not out with friends in San Diego, Santa Clarita, or Santa Monica, we’re hiking, visiting family, watching sports, or watching movies. I’m a movie junkie and Ryan just isn’t so I try to expand his pop culture as much as I can. Ryan is a huge sports guy, any sports you name it honestly, and he’s watching it as I’m forced to watch it too, haha. He takes fantasy sports quite seriously and his dream job is to work in that type of field.
We both work at UCLA Health. I work in HR for the Department of Radiology and Ryan works in Finance for the Department of Pathology."
About the wedding: "Our concept is very laid back, we just want to make sure our guests have a good time. Our girls will be in terracotta/cinnamon rose colors and the men will be in navy suits. The colors more specifically are terracotta, navy, with sage accents. I’d like to say we’re going for rustic romantic? We’re definitely doing a first look. We have a welcome sign, sign in area, and will also be having an “in loving memory” candle with photos for the ones we’ve lost."
