How We Met Disclaimer: There's nothing super romantic about this story at all, as we met on the "drunk bus" heading downtown to ya know...do what college kids do. Turns out the saying about never knowing when/where you might meet your future husband is true! It was one of Emmie's best friends birthdays (shoutout @ColleenMurphy), so she had promised her that they would celebrate in 5 Points following the South Carolina game #GoCocks. Matt had somehow gotten separated from his friends throughout the course of the day and decided to make his way to 5 Points to find them. Matt and Emmie had unknowingly lived beside each other in the same apartment complex, but their paths did not cross until boarding the apartment shuttle that night. Emmie sat next to Matt on the shuttle, who decided to try out the pickup line he had been working on..."you're going to be my next girlfriend." Turns out Matt had a pretty good intuition, and they've enjoyed adding chapters to their story ever since! How He Proposed [Cue the Romanticism]: It was Memorial Day Weekend, and Emmie's family + Matt were heading down to Folly Beach to celebrate Memorial Day and Emmie's parents 30th wedding anniversary. Emmie's father had recently passed away, so the weekend was predestined to be an emotional yet special weekend. The week leading up to MDW, Emmie had moved in with a friend's family in Charlotte (shoutout to Hotel McDuffie) and began her final internship for school, so she invited Cameron to come along with her. When Emmie and Cameron got to Folly after work, Matt was standing in the driveway with an old-school lantern. Cameron promptly took a call from her Mom and agreed to meet up with them later as Matt and Emmie headed out to the beach. Once they walked down the street and turned the corner to the beach access covered in lights, Matt started to get nervous- and the lantern decided to burn out. He got down on one knee on the boardwalk (sand is not my friend), spoke from the heart under the full moon with the waves in the background and Emmie said YES (after she made a joke about not being able to see the ring due to the burnt out lantern). Matt then pulled out a letter that he had gotten Emmie's Dad to write before he passed about his secrets for a long-lasting marriage and congratulating the newly-engaged couple, which was the most thoughtful and special thing she could have imagined. On the way back to the house, Emmie asked who all was in on the secret...little did she know that she would soon walk into a house full of her closest friends and family throwing her an engagement party! Best. Weekend. Ever.
