A civil wedding is very straight-forward. While many people may think this style of wedding is limited to a courthouse ceremony, in fact, it's simply any nonreligious legal ceremony with a legal official acting as officiant, as opposed to a religious one.

Civil weddings have no religious affiliation and a government or civil official must preside over their ceremony, as opposed to a religious figure.
