The Most Charmingly Relatable NYC Love Story You'll Ever Hear

On New Years Eve 2014, Pam went to the wrong bar, but found the right man. (Sorry, had to. 😬) After a bit of a mixup, she walked into Brother Jimmy's on the Upper West Side, where she met Jason. We can confirm that their wedding film by Heartistree Studios is just as sweet as their love story — watch it below and read on for our interview with Pam.

The Love Story

How did you meet and fall in love?

Fate led me to the \"wrong\" bar and his friend got sick on New Year's Eve 2014, causing both of us to end up at Brother Jimmy's on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. I thought he was weird for being alone on NYE. He thought I was too young. But, apparently, we were both good talkers (and good dancers) because we liked what the other had to say—so much so that we talked the whole night. Yes, talked. A month later we drove to North Carolina so I could meet his family. They turned out to be about as sweet and loving as you can ask for in a partner's family, so I decided I'd keep him. He liked my family too. Upon our return home, instead of lugging my suitcase all the way back uptown to the Bronx, I said, \"Hey! Let's just unpack it in his apartment.\" YOLO, right? He decided to keep me.

Tell us how the proposal happened.

On September 4th of 2016, he took me on a walk through Central Park where we were being followed…by a photographer and videographer (unbeknownst to me). By the water, he got down on one knee while someone sang \"More of You\" by Chris Stapleton while playing the mandolin on a bench right behind us. It was one of the best days of my life. And since I pretty much blacked out during the actual proposal, I'm so thankful for him and the photos and video. He did so good.

The Wedding

Tell us about something that was creative or unique to your wedding.

I'm Dominican and he's southern. It was important that both sides of us be reflected in our wedding. For our first dance, we slowed danced to \"More of You\" by Chris Stapleton. We did two verses of it and then surprised all of our guests (including a lot of my family that flew in from the Dominican Replubic!) with a breakout merengue dance to one of my favorite songs \"Suavamente\" by Elvis Crespo. My husband has moves! We needed to show that off. Our videographer and photographer were able to capture the sheer look of surprise, joy and celebration on our family's faces. I will cherish that forever.

Describe the moment from your wedding day that stands out to you the most.

We were really so lucky that everything came together so beautifully since we planned this Asheville wedding from New York. So everything was really so wonderful. One thing that stood out though to both Jason and myself is that no one took the early bus back to the hotels! And all the music that was played was dancing music. It really was just a night of dancing and celebrating. Exactly what we wanted.

How did you find your wedding dress? Who designed it and how did you know it was the one?

My fabulous coworker Heather told me about Pronovias when I first told her I was engaged. I knew I wanted a mermaid style from the beginning and Pronovias matched that aesthetic. I went to one fitting and our bridal attendant brought out the dress I ended up picking second out of four. I tried it back on at the end and it all just clicked.

What made your wedding feel extra special to you and your partner?

My husband and I planned it ourselves. The venue was great in that we were able to select food and decor from them. They made everything super easy. But everything from the plates to the signs to the flowers - my husband and I had an active role in selecting. In fact, we made signs ourselves in addition to place settings and the seating chart. It was very personal and very us. All the vendors were just excellent to work with as well.

How did you find your filmmaker and what made you choose them?

I found them off of Borrowed and Blue. I believe in signs and their name is Heartistree Studios. My husband and I wanted to get married on a mountain due in part to our affinity for the outdoors, mountains and trees. So I liked them already based off of just that. I spoke with Jenny on webcam since she is based local to the wedding venue and not to where we live. We just clicked. We really went with our guts and her vibes and am so glad we did. I gave her minimal direction and she and her partner Bryan just blew out the damn park.

What is your favorite moment from your wedding film?

The dancing! And the quiet and candid moments they captured of Jason and me.

What do you think the \"secret sauce\" to your relationship is?

Communication. We are very open with one another and fundamentally respect one another. Even in disagreements we trust that the place we're speaking from is a good one. We just want the best for one another.

What is the No.1 piece of wedding planning advice you wish you would have known?

You don't need to break the bank to have a meaningful and beautiful wedding. At the end of the day, a wedding is meant to be a proclamation of love, not how much money you spent. So just do you and honor yourselves. It will be magical.
