We met on OKCupid. Sunaina was Matt’s first date! Matt, who grew up in Hawaii, and Sunaina, who grew up in Texas, first met over chai and hot chocolate at Ost Cafe in New York City. Matt remembers Sunaina’s serious and tough questions and feeling like he was in a job interview (“If there was one thing you could change about the world, what would it be?”). Sunaina says he advanced to the next round because of his kind smile and thoughtful answers. Both left the coffee date wanting to meet up again soon. Soon, they were each learning more about the other’s world. Matt took Sunaina to Comic Con to play with geeks, and Sunaina took Matt to Farm Sanctuary to play with pigs. Matt helped Sunaina understand that she’s allowed to relax once in a while and exposed her to more board games than she knew existed, and Sunaina took Matt to her meditation group and taught him the basics of the flute and dholak. A year and nine months later, Sunaina and Matt sat under a tree by a lake in Central Park. They read to each other words of gratitude by Thich Nhat Hahn and committed to spending their lives together. Isn’t that beautiful?!
