Even from more than 1,000 miles apart, our love for our hometown managed to bring us together. In the spring of 2017, Sarah’s former high school teacher-turned-friend (and then colleague of Phil’s) visited New York City, where Sarah lived at the time. They met for lunch and caught up and, oh, what’s that, a Kansas City tattoo Sarah had gotten? The teacher then told Sarah about a young man she taught with at who had also permanently inked his love for KC on his body, and you know what, come to think of it, the two of them would really hit it off. Then, they said their goodbyes and Sarah thought nothing of it. Not till that teacher and another dear former teacher of Sarah’s, who had since been recruited to be part of the match-making, were following up about their wonderful and single colleague, Phillip Miller. They were simultaneously telling Phil about Sarah, the former student who was cool enough she became their friend. Phillip and Sarah had no clue who one another were, but they knew the individuals urging the introduction couldn’t steer them wrong. So like any good millennial, Phil added Sarah on Instagram and slid into her DMs. Instagram messages turned into texts which quickly became daily phone calls until the two of them finally had the chance to meet in person in Kansas City after a month of getting to know one another from afar. Sarah made the move back ‘home’ to Kansas City a couple months after meeting Phil. The two dated for 2.5 years before getting engaged.
