Wedding Date on Jul 2, 2017

Bryce and Rachel met at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Both were business majors and part of the Business Fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi. Additionally, the two were minoring in Chinese and part of the China Business Program. Fortunately for Rachel, she took a summer of intensive Chinese in Tianjin, China, which bumped her up a year in coursework. This meant that she joined Bryce her Sophomore year in the Junior level classes where they began to interact more. Rachel also attributes some of their initial friendship to groomsman Chris Doubell (her big in their business fraternity) who lived with Bryce. Chris would often host events at their house which allowed Rachel to see Bryce more often. BRYCE’S VERSION It was meant to be that Rachel chose to attend Miami University over many other reputable colleges. It was our Miami connection that allowed a friendship to begin, through several touch points including the AKPsi business fraternity, China Business Program, and several mutual friends. Throughout my time at Miami, I was focused on school and building the right foundation for my career. Finding the "right" girl of course was important, but more of a secondary thought. However, Rachel was someone I always had my eye on and talked to her whenever the opportunity presented. During my Junior year she had a Chinese class right after mine and I loved stopping to say hello and talking with her between classes. We had developed a friendly relationship, but still relatively surface level in terms of our understanding of who we were as people. After I had finished my internship with JP Morgan in NYC and accepted a full time offer, she texted to congratulate me and I mentioned I would be back in Oxford before I left for China and would love to see her. On my last night there, I asked her to hang out but unfortunately, she was busy. I ended up staying one extra day in Oxford, just to get the chance to see her before I left. The plan was to go hang out with a bunch of other mutual friends uptown, but we both decided we would rather talk on a bench in quiet and get to know each other. After talking for 3 hours without stopping for a breath, it was obvious we aligned on fundamental beliefs and had a strong attraction on multiple levels. I knew that I was heading off to study abroad in China for a semester and Rachel would be a single lady back in Oxford, so I needed to make a move if I was serious, or risk her finding someone else while I was gone! We had a 5 hour Skype call before my flight left for China to lay everything on the table in terms of who we were, what we believed, and who we wanted in a partner. After that I had a strong conviction to pursue Rachel with all my heart, despite being half way around the world! In the next few weeks we started dating officially. Very quickly I knew Rachel was the girl I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, and the rest is history. RACHEL'S VERSION I’d always liked Bryce since the first time I met him. How could you not? He’s funny, smart, charming, and not to mention totally handsome! We saw each other from time to time in various business fraternity events but never spent any truly meaningful time together. When Bryce accepted his job offer with JP Morgan the summer before his senior year, I texted him to congratulate him. We made small talk and caught up on each other’s summers—he was on a trip to Napa with his family at the time. I also provided him with as much advice as I could think of for his upcoming semester in China. Communicating with Bryce has always been easy. We’ve never run out of topics to discuss, he’s incredibly thoughtful with his choice of words, and he is a great listener. The more we talked, the more I liked him. The sad part was that he was leaving for China for an entire semester. He came back to Oxford for a few days before he left, and asked to meet up with me. I told him I was busy that night—the truth is that I was too afraid to meet up with him. I knew I liked him, and thought, “What’s the point of seeing him, and liking him more, when he is about to leave.” Luckily for me, he extended his trip one extra day. He picked me up and our plan was to go to “Karaoke Night” in uptown Oxford. Before heading to the bar, we stopped on a bench to talk. We spent 3 hours talking that night about everything imaginable. It was so easy being around him that to know he was leaving for 4 months was already painful. We said goodbye (no kiss—just a hug!) and he went back to Stow to pack before his trip. The night before he left for China we spent 5 hours talking on Skype. We both revealed that we liked one another, but didn’t want to start a long-distance relationship if we ultimately disagreed on core beliefs. So we spent that night having hard conversations—things that couples don’t normally discuss right away: faith, upbringing, what you look for in a partner, career goals, life goals, children, marriage, past relationships, you name it. The amazing part was, we were aligned on almost everything. It was clear to me that Bryce wasn’t someone I should let go. I’d never met a man like him and I knew very early on that I could marry him. We spent the next 4 months Skyping, facetiming, texting, writing letters, and building our communication. It wasn’t easy but I look back now and am so thankful for the foundation we were able to build.
