Lisa and Martin have been together now for many years. As Lisa is a Doctor of Psychology, Martin loves to joke that he is kept around as a psychology project! They are living in Bristol in the UK but as the couple hail from Ireland (Donegal and Galway). They travelled back from the UK to Ireland to have their wedding.

Many Irish wedding traditions originated from a fear of evil spirits in ancient Ireland, which is why you'll see many symbols of luck incorporated in an Irish wedding, like horseshoes and shamrocks. Music may come from Irish Uilleann Pipes or the Celtic harp, both sweeter than the Scottish bagpipes and renowned in Ireland. 

Grooms may consider a kilt, while brides may include Irish lace or Celtic symbols like knots, crosses or shamrocks in white embroidery.

Irish weddings are full of traditions dated back centuries from kilts, pipes and Claddagh rings to Celtic symbols and handfasting. It's far more than the kilts and shamrocks that may come to mind and it's up to the couple how much they choose to incorporate. 

One of our favorite Irish wedding traditions is the ancient Celtic handfasting ceremony. It's a symbol of unity and sometimes couples choose it instead of vows. The officiant will wrap a ribbon or cord around the couple's hands as they recite promises and commitments until their hands are bound together. And despite modern practice, Saturday was actually considered an unlucky day to wed in Irish tradition so use that as an excuse to save some money and get married on a Tuesday or Wednesday!
