Wedding Date on Oct 23, 2021

August 1st, 2016 Chandler and Emma flew to DFW to begin a year-long fellowship with the nonprofit AgriCorps where they would live in Ghana, West Africa. The 15 passenger van picked each of the 11 Americans up at different gates and Chandler was the last person to be picked up. When the van doors opened and Emma turned around and saw him for the first time, she literally stopped breathing for about 5 seconds and thought wow, I'm in deep and we haven't even said hello! The group went to a fast-food restaurant and Emma and Chandler offered to get everyone napkins and straws and plasticware. Well, Emma offered to help Chandler get those items! A few of Emma's friends had previously met Chandler and one friend told Emma, "You are going to go to Africa and fall in love with this guy!" Emma and Chandler both enjoyed running and at the training facility there was a mile loop trail that Emma would run on. She saw Chandler watching her the first few days and later he would join her on these runs. He later admitted he was timing how fast she ran a mile! Chandler had to miss his college graduation that first week of August because he was attending training before leaving for Ghana and Emma felt bad and wanted him to feel celebrated. She got him a small cake and ice cream for the group to share! August 10th, the group had to pack our bags to fly to Ghana the next day. Chandler and Emma decided to use Chandler's extra duffel bag and pack all the extra items given to them during their training and split the cost of the extra bag. Nervous energy and indecisiveness of how to pack all the bags to fly across the world turned into a late-night and Chandler and Emma realized they were hungry. At 3am, they went into the kitchen at the training facility and made protein pancakes, which are still a favorite food of the couple today! August 11th, Chandler asked to switch seats on the flight to Ghana so that he could sit next to Emma. While watching a movie on the plane both fell asleep and when Emma woke up she realized she fell asleep on Chandler and they were holding hands! How did that happen!? The two spent the next couple of weeks in Ghana completing cultural training and each day would take long walks and talk. August 31st, they each went to different villages 16+ hours apart and became 6th grade teachers. They talked on the phone everyday and saw each other at monthly trainings. Chandlers became ill with malaria twice and came to stay with Emma in her village. Chandler became ill with typhoid and was hospitalized in Ghana and Emma went to stay with him in his village while he recovered. Their favorite hostel was in the capital city of Accra, called the Sleepy Hippo! Both came home to the United States in January of 2017 and Chandler lived in Emma's hometown in NC for the next year. February 14th, 2017 Chandler gave Emma a bouquet of roses and asked her to be his girlfriend! The rest is history :)
