True confession: I’ve been hooked on the TV show “This Is Us” since day 1. One of the things I find most beautiful about it is the way it highlights the key role that timing plays in all our lives. We never know what’s coming up for us. It’s only in the turning around that we get a full view of everything it took to get us where we are. This film speaks to that same theme. I wanted to make a piece for Echo & Ross that felt like turning around at the top of the hill to gloriously take in all the ground they walked and switchbacks they took to make it to the place where they could, and did, decided on each other. Bride’s: Echo (her American name) // Yuhan (her Chinese name), Groom: Ross (his American name) // Mengyang (his Chinese name) — — Filming a wedding day that was almost entirely in a foreign language presented me with a set of distinct and worthwhile challenges. I didn’t discover the meaning of most of what was actually said until I was in the editing room with my translator. It was like developing a roll of film you forgot you shot or unearthing a thousand buried treasures on the beach. At the end of the day, it was special to experience that you don’t need to share the same language to understand the heart of what’s being said. I drove away from this wedding knowing I was in the company of people who really loved each other.
