Do you ever meet people and immediately think ‘I want to be their friend!’ but quickly realize these people are way cooler than you and it would never work? That’s how we felt when we met Chantal and Gabriel. They are the coolest. They are both filmmakers themselves (VERY good ones) and they were planning an intimate wedding on the beach in Tofino (one of our favourite places). We were actually fully booked when they reached out but we obviously HAD to make an exception. And upon shooting their day we were not wrong to do so.
You learn a lot about a couple on their wedding day (obviously) but what shows me a couple’s true colours the most is how they handle the things that don’t turn out ‘perfectly’ on their day. In particular, the weather.
As a past bride myself I can tell you I was preeeetty disappointed in the constant foggy drizzle we had on our wedding day (mostly because my hair just can’t do rain) and I knowingly booked a May wedding in Vancouver! - what did I THINK I would get?! Chantal and Gabriel were smarter than me and booked a summer wedding and got… a torrential downpour. Almost the entire day. Just ridiculous. It was socked in, raining sideways, and also freezing - like that damp-cold the west coast is so known for.
Based on their attitudes you would have thought they had clear skies and a nice breeze! These. Two. Were. Champions. They didn’t even hide out under umbrellas! Just fully received what the sky gave them, ran barefoot on the beach and jumped in the waves IN their wedding clothes. I am still so impressed. I will always be impressed. By them embracing the weather it ended up being a really beautiful part of their day instead of something we all had to work around. We are so happy for you two and are so honoured you trusted us to create your film.
