Evie: We originally were set up by mutual friends over an informal work interview (who were TOTALLY trying to set us up after all), and less than a week later he took me to dinner where he said “Ev, I don’t want to hire you, I want to date you”. By Friday, we were total goners and knew that what we’d stumbled into was the real thing. He proposed in Laguna Beach six months later, where he showed me the video he’d been making for his future wife for the past ten years! He really is a dream come true.

Quinn: The proposal video journey all began with a recklessly courageous prayer when I was seventeen years old, “Lord, how do I start loving my future wife today”. I didn’t know who she was, but I knew she was out there somewhere. Instead of dating for the heck of it or living selfishly, I was captivated by the thought of focusing my all on her. This revelation was so delightful. I knew that I might not meet my future wife for years, but when we did finally meet she would come to learn just how deeply and loyally I had loved her since I was young. She would realize that all this time my prayers, dreams, sacrifices, creativity, and ambitions were pointed to her.

In order to understand my thought process, it’s important to mention that I’m a big fan of Jesus. My otherworldly question, “how do I love my future wife today,” was rooted in a relationship with Him. I loved reading His love letter to us, the Bible. In this story, he weaves together a declaration of sacrifice and love since long before we were ever aware. Jesus chose us, loved us, and pursued us before we knew Him. The story of His love for us is so much more intricate, intentional, and timeless than we can ever imagine. As a seventeen-year-old I would sit in awe, spellbound by how beautifully He wove together His love story to us through history. I was so captivated that I desperately wanted to write a love letter to my wife that reflected Him by being similarly intentional, timeless, and beginning long before she knew me.

So at age seventeen I put pen to paper and wrote my love letter. I wanted to live out the story of my love for her, so I printed out each word of the letter, tossed it in my backpack, and filmed a clip everywhere I went with the intention of showing her the compilation the day I proposed. Whether I was studying in Switzerland, interning in London, serving in refugee camps in the Middle East, or traveling through Asia, I felt like I was including her in my journey as my love letter unfolded. It was the biggest undertaking of my life filming this over the past decade, but I kept reminding myself that the thousand hours I invested was my bold declaration of love, loyalty, passion, and commitment to her. And that was the most important thing I could ever communicate.

And even more so, it reflected THE most important message: that Jesus loved her with infinitely more passion and commitment than I could ever muster. That He loved her from the beginning of time, was pursuing her even when she didn’t know it, and that he longed for a life with her.

When I did, in fact, meet my future wife I knew in an instant she was exactly who He had been preparing me for. Her unbridled joy, intoxicating beauty, and fierce passion for Jesus swept me off my feet, and FAST (we went on our first date on a Monday, by Friday I confessed my love for her, Sunday she met my family, and the next we were discussing marriage. Crazy, I know!) I always had a sense that when I met her it would be clear as day, and indeed falling in love with her felt like a tidal wave. In an instant, all my prayers, dreams, and sacrifices became tokens of love that I knew she would cherish for a lifetime. And my love letter fit like a puzzle piece in her story and was so clearly meant for her.

When I began I thought I would only ever share this with my future wife. But this journey changed everything. Now that we’ve found each other we both decided to let others in on the story. I hope you can be encouraged by my love for her, but even more so, awestruck by Jesus’ enduring love for you!
