Kenzie & Evan met in a mandatory graduate introductory class, since they were both in graduate school at NC State, pursuing a masters in biology. Evan is a paleontologist (Masters expected in May 2021 and will go on for his PhD) and Kenzie is pursuing a career in science education (Masters in biology expected in May 2021, Masters of Education expected in December 2021, and will go on for my PhD in Teaching and Learning in STEM). They were both required to take an introductory class in order to meet program requirements in January of 2020. When Kenzie saw him she thought he was super interesting and loved his crazy shirts, but he was mysterious since he didn’t talk in class at all. In February 2020, Kenzie was presenting her education research at a Teaching & Learning symposium and ran into Evan. They had our first conversation over science education research and Kenzie couldn’t get over how cute he was in his sweater. After the presentation, she asked what session he was going to next saying she couldn’t make that one, and asked him to send her the notes. He was oblivious to the fact she was interested, said of course, and then went to the next session. Evan ended up emailing (haha totally not what Kenzie was going for) the notes a day later.

Fast forward a few months and quarantine hit. Classes all went online, they both went home to stay with their families, Kenzie in NC, and Evan in AZ. After classes ended in May, Kenzie followed him on Instagram and Evan followed back immediately. About a week later, Kenzie ended up sliding into his DMs over his story which consisted of a charcuterie board and a margarita (two of her favorite things!) and they never stopped talking. They sent the longest Instagram DMs ever for over 5 days before he asked for her number. They texted nonstop and Evan ended up asking Kenzie on a Zoom date June 7th. They picked out drinks for the other to make and talked on Zoom for over 3 hours. Directly after the first date, Evan asked for a second 🙂 June 14th they talked for over 4 hours on Zoom and played Headsup and Battleship! After they hung up he called her within a few minutes pouring his heart out and asking Kenzie to be his girlfriend. Kenzie of course said yes, crying over how sweet and thoughtful he was.

Evan flew out to see Kenzie for a week before he went to New Mexico and Utah for a 5 week dig (for non-paleo people: they spend all day everyday chipping away at the group to find and dig up dinosaurs). There was a storm so his plane got rerouted to Richmond, VA and he wouldn’t be able to see Kenzie until the following morning. So being the perfect man ever, Evan ended up renting a car and driving to Kenzie, pulling up at 11 pm. Evan said from the moment he saw Kenzie in the doorway waving he knew she was it. Kenzie knew from the moment she looked into his eyes that he was the one. They fell in love incredibly fast (3 days in person!), to anyone who hasn’t experienced this love it is almost impossible to describe. Those 5 weeks went by so slow, but once Evan got back from his dig things accelerated. They became best friends with each other’s families and fell even deeper in love. Evan’s parents, Nick and Stacy, came out to Raleigh to enjoy some time with them and my oh my did they have the best time. After a week and a half of nonstop laughter and food adventures they had a nice dinner at the Oak. They held up their drinks to cheers and that’s when Nick and Stacy said “here’s to our new daughter,” of course Evan and Kenzie were in tears again (but whats new here?). They ended their trip with a brunch to meet Kenzie’s parents, Bob and Meredith. Within 7 minutes Stacy and Meredith were talking about a wedding and Bob and Nick were like old friends. They are so blessed that their families are already best friends with one another and their friends are so awesome and supportive of their relationship.

Now onto the proposal! They decided to go to Kansas (Ev did his undergrad at KU) to visit his best friends for the weekend. Kenzie got to see his college town and meet everyone, which was awesome. They spent almost all day everyday together so Kenzie didn’t think any proposal was in the works for Kansas, after all he had been working all week and only left once during the day to go to the museum on Monday. He wouldn’t have had time to go to Greensboro to talk with Kenzie’s family, or so she thought. Evan actually didn’t go to the museum on Monday, but instead drove to Greensboro, picked up Kenzie’s parents, and went to lunch to ask for her hand in marriage. Bob ended up having a 3 page list of questions ready (if you know Bob, this is hilariously accurate) to ask Evan before he gave him his blessing. Bob and Meredith already loved Evan, but after that 2+ hour lunch (more like job interview lol) they accepted him as a son. They couldn’t imagine a better man for their daughter to marry.

Evan had planned to take pictures together in the sunflower fields with Kenzie, which were in beautiful bloom since his friend, Brooklyn loves photography. Kenzie was oblivious to what was going on, but everyone was in on it. She wanted to get the pictures done ASAP since it was hot and she didn’t want sweaty pictures (lol), so she messed up the plan Brooklyn and Evan made for them to go last. To make sure Kenzie didn’t get suspicious Brooklyn had them pose and Kenzie saw Evan’s other best friend Travis videoing us / the sunflowers. She was a little confused but still didn’t think anything of it, then they were done and other friends began taking pictures! Brooklyn told them she had some other ideas and was stressing out over the “perfect sunflowers,” Kenzie told her she just wanted to take pictures with their other friend, Kyra’s puppy (if you know Kenzie then this is spot on). Brooklyn took some pics then demanded Kenzie come take pictures, where she told her to walk in front of Evan, while holding his hand. Kenzie said it would look weird and wasn’t sure about the pose. Brooklyn promised it would be perfect so Kenzie agreed and walked forward. Before Kenzie knew it, Evan counted to 5 (out loud haha he was so nervous!!) and said “this is the perfect spot, McKenzie Diane Nalley” will you marry me? He opened a dream box (Brooklyn had given him one a year before that was meant for him to put his dreams inside so that they would come true) and pulled out the most beautiful emerald cut ring. Kenzie was so caught of guard she could barely speak, all that came out was “what!!” and “Oh my God, Ev”. Evan was thinking please just say yes and Kenzie finally nodded her head. They both were in tears, trying not to entirely sob. They popped a bottle of champagne and cheered to their engagement before FaceTiming their families to share the good news and celebrate!
