Justin- In April 2017, I was living in Saint Petersburg, Florida alone. One Thursday afternoon, I got a call from Kelsey saying she had been offered and accepted a job in Tampa! I didn’t waste any time, I immediately started planning the proposal. I booked a place on Anna Maria Island for July 14th, had my brothers and sister in law, Chris, Mitchell and Samantha, Kelsey’s brother, Connor, and our friends Jeff and Craig all travel from as far as Colorado. Sadly, her younger brother, Danny, couldn’t make it since he was reporting to college. (GO ARMY!)

On Tuesday, July 11, Kelsey took her NCLEX (nursing licensing) to become a registered nurse. She found out that Thursday that she passed! I told her we were going to celebrate with dinner in Anna Maria Island, then we’ll go down to Naples to meet with Chris and Sam and see my grandparents for the weekend. Little did she know, my grandparents were in Rhode Island!

The day of the proposal, I got home from work around 4pm. We were all packed for a weekend trip, and at 6:30pm we went on the hour long drive across the Saint Petersburg Skyway bridge. On the drive over, I tried to avoid talking about work and keep the conversation happy. However, all of my efforts seriously failed. When we were driving past the sign that reads “Welcome to Anna Maria Island”, where our family and best friends were waiting for us, Kelsey STARTED CRYING! Due to the heaviness of the test, recently graduating, moving to a new place, and starting a new job Kelsey was hit with a surge of emotions and started balling 20 minutes before I was going to ask her to marry me. She was crying so much, I almost called Sam to to postpone the proposal.

About five minutes later, she thankfully stopped crying as we pulled into the restaurant. I didn’t play things very well. Sam had called me to ask where we were and I immediately took the call off of the car bluetooth. Kelsey noticed. It was 8pm, and sunset was at 8:30. Before we put our name in for a table, I told Kelsey I wanted to go walk to the end of the island for the sunset. She didn’t like the idea, and said we should just eat now. I became annoyingly persistent, and we went for a walk. It was then she knew what was happening. I knew it was a 20 minute walk to the tip of the island, so I was in a serious rush to get there for the sunset. This was weird for Kelsey, because I never rush for anything. I tried to play it off and talk, but she wouldn’t talk to me and just kept giving me looks. I kept saying things like “Look how cool these sand dunes are” and she would scoff and look away. She was so on to me.

We walked for about 15 minutes when we saw a stuffed animal manatee, a note and champagne waiting on top of a blanket in the sand (stuff I had given the fam). I called Kelsey over and told her she should take a look.

From Kelsey’s point of view: I saw a blanket with a small stuffed animal and a note written in Justin’s fancy cursive and realized this is exactly what he did when he asked me to be his girlfriend. I knew what was going down as soon as I noticed that special handwriting and stuffed animal. I read the note, stood up, turned around and saw him down on one knee. I grabbed his hand and said “I knew it!” After a minute, I said “Yes” then leaned over and hugged him.

We all grabbed dinner then had a great night celebrating. The next day, we rented a boat and spent the day on Florida’s beautiful waters, the perfect way to celebrate the beginning of our lives together. A year and a half later, we’re so excited to finally be taking the next step and officially tie the knot!
