Watch: “The Bachelor” Alum Tenley Molzahn’s Gorgeous Backyard California Wedding

We caught up with The Bachelor alum Tenley Molzahn to learn about how her gorgeous backyard California wedding came to life. From the custom juice wall to the family-style dinner seating and romantic, beach-y décor, the entire day was a reflection of Tenley and Taylor. Intimate, low-key, and health-minded, their romantic day is sure to inspire. Watch their wedding film by Sculpting With Time below and then read on for our interview with Tenley.

How did you and Taylor meet and fall in love?

We were set up by a mutual friend. The friend (who had been in a Bible study with Taylor) just thought the two of us should meet. We met for a blind date at a favorite local coffee shop. The afternoon coffee date turned into four hours at a coffee shop and an hour of Taylor teaching me how to drive stick in his old ’64 Ford! He tried to keep the date going on to dinner, and I totally would’ve gone, but I had plans with a girlfriend I couldn’t cancel. That evening we both said goodbye knowing that was it for each of us!

Tell us how the proposal happened.

Friday, January 12, 2018. I didn’t know that I was waking up to another day that would change my life forever. I had a rough day the day before, so I started my day super early trying to rally so I could have a much better start to the day and weekend ahead. Nothing was unusual about this Friday. I worked early morning hours at my computer, received a call from Taylor on his drive to work. I went to take a barre class and then I taught two classes. After teaching, I headed to the salon for a blowout, which I often do on Fridays before a date night with Taylor. Taylor and I had a date planned that evening to take some drinks down to the beach and watch the sunset—we had been hoping to watch a “Space X” launch, but that apparently launched earlier in the day. Drinks on the beach at sunset on a Friday night aren’t out of the norm for us either. In fact, those are some of my most favorite date nights. But as I was getting my hair done, the fog started rolling in so I lost my motivation to get to Taylor’s house quickly, assuming we might not even catch a sunset. But I received a text from Taylor asking me, “are you almost done?” Something inside of me told me that I should probably quit taking my time and get going. But for the record, I didn’t expect what was to come.

I got to Taylor’s house and he had our bikes pulled out and ready to go. His neighbors were out chatting, everything was normal. We hopped on our bikes to chase the foggy sunset! He’s lucky I just like sitting at the beach with him or the fog would have been a tough sell! We walked down to the beach and put out the blanket, opened up a bottle of Bootchcraft, which is nothing fancy, so I didn’t think much of it. We sat and chatted, and then Taylor started being extremely loving and encouraging and speaking sweet sentiments to me. I assumed he was just trying to build me up because I had such a tough day before, but then he asked me to stand up! “Stand up?” I asked, “why?” He said, “Babe, I just need you to stand up.” I think I kinda knew then, because for some reason I rebelled and just kissed him and giggled and said, “no.” But then he asked me once again and I finally followed directions and took to my feet as he reached into his jacket pocket and got on one knee. So many emotions hit me in that moment. And just like most girls, I’m not sure I remember the precious words he said as he opened the box as my heart was jumping out of me and all I wanted to do was kiss the man that was on his knee before me. I dove straight into that handsome face and kissed him. He stood up and I think the actual question came, or I finally heard it, as he asked me to marry him. Ecstatically and in shock I said, “YES!”

This man has chosen me! My eyes still well up. He is my Epic Love Story. 💕 Our Engagement Story is finally up! {Link in my profile!} . . . #sweetandfreelife #sweetandfreelifewedding #engagementphotos #engagementstory

The story of the evening does continue, as we celebrated on the beach with a bottle of champagne, that had been brought down to the beach by one of his best friends and roommates, Bubba. Bubba’s job was to capture the moment. He had been hiding the moment it happened and caught the whole thing. I couldn’t be more grateful for these memories that we will have forever.

Taylor and I had a few moments just the two of us soaking it in. The one thing Taylor said he wanted of the proposal was for it to be a complete surprise, and it definitely was. But that’s not where the surprises ended. We headed to his parents house to celebrate with them, and in the meantime I called my family in Oregon to share with them. I thought everything was normal (yet again) until I walked into the Leopold’s home and saw my parents, and some of my most nearest and dearest friends, and Taylor’s too! Taylor had thrown a surprise engagement party!

That night we celebrated. And it was perfect. The night of our engagement actually inspired and set the tone of our wedding. Small, intimate, backyard, bonfire feel.

What are your favorite unique and personal touches from your wedding?

Our wedding planners and designers, Amorology helped us add some really special touches that made the whole day so “us.” From the location of our wedding, the size, the flow of the day, our ceremony, and the seating and style of our dinner! I’ll break some of the elements down!

Our location was a dreamy backyard setting at our wedding planner’s home, which is a wedding venue called Chez Balliet in San Marcos, CA. We chose to have a super intimate wedding, with a 75 person guest list. Definitely not easy to cut down, but made the whole day even more special. Because our wedding was on a Friday, our guests were greeted with signature cocktails form Barcon and ice cream from Jojo’s Creamery, the sweetest ice cream cart, and live music from OttoPilot. Deserts, drinks, and music!

@tenleymolzahn's healthy lifestyle was a big influence when it came time for the seating display. Our good friend, one of my best friend’s husbands, married us and it was very us and centered around our faith! Our seating chart was also a stand-out. With my career in nutrition in mind, Amorology set the seating by using carafs of juices that told our guests where they were sitting. We had a family-style dinner and seating and it helped pull all of the intimate and romantic pieces together, and our family-style food from Miho Catering was UNREAL!

The table décor featured brown taper candles in midcentury candlesticks and pillar candles to add ambiance and play off the vibrant juicy tones used in the centerpieces—and the juice-filled bottles that doubled as table numbers. #marthaweddings 📷: @featherandstonephotography | Venue: @chezballiet | 📋 + Design: @amorology | 🍴: @mihocateringco | 🌸: @oakandtheowl | Rentals: @hostesshaven, @adorefolklore, @latavolalinen, @brighteventrentals

Our flowers were some of my favorite touches! Especially the gorgeous tree swing, wrapped in the most beautiful flowers! Even our dessert table was such a reflection of our beach lifestyle, as it looked like a wave! There were desserts everywhere. Oh, and my mother in law a very talented graphic designer made our invitations — she added such special details!

What is it like to plan a wedding that so many people are excited to see photos and videos from? Did you feel a lot of pressure to make your wedding perfect?

Great question! I think I did feel a little pressure at first, but then at the end of the day, it was about Taylor and I getting married!

We are so in love with the color scheme of your wedding, how did you choose what aesthetic you wanted to go for in your wedding? Who helped you bring your vision to life?

THANK YOU! Heather at Amorology really watched and listened to what pulled my attention, and brought everything to life, and we totally worked off of each other with colors.

Your wedding dress is gorgeous. How did you find it? Who designed it and how did you know it was the one?

Thank you. It was so me. And my mom found it! Since my mom was already in town the day after I got engaged, we decided to pop into a local bridal salon to do some wedding dress shopping together. I got a sense of the style, shape, and feel I was looking for, but didn’t buy anything. Two weeks later, my mom was back home and visited another shop, where she found what she thought was “the one” and sent me a link before encouraging me to find it locally. So, a friend and I went to Something Bleu. Expectations were low, but when I slipped it on and walked out of the dressing room, my girlfriend cried. I looked in the mirror and had tears and immediately FaceTimed my mom so she could be a part of the moment. And then I FaceTimed Taylor’s mom. I knew it was “the one.” The lace Lillian West wedding dress had a sweetheart neckline, mermaid silhouette, and chapel-length train. I invited my other bridesmaids and mother-in-law to the boutique to be there on the day I ordered the dress and we popped some bubbly to celebrate. On the wedding day, my bridal party chose different dresses from Lulus in a handful of colors, and accessorized with earrings by the same brand, bracelets from Juneau Luxe, and necklaces from Nashelle.

Your biggest fans will know that nutrition and living a healthy lifestyle is important to you. Did you do anything differently pre-wedding to make sure your health, skin, wellness etc. were ready for the big day? Any tips for brides-to-be?

Thanks for knowing that about me! 😉 I didn’t necessarily change anything, but I definitely didn’t miss a beat when it came to my daily routine! We planned our wedding in under four months, and I was as ready as I can be! Advice for brides: Drink water, avoid refined sugars, and eat lots of green veggies! But still enjoy every single moment, so if that means champagne or wedding cake testing, do it!

What made your wedding feel extra special to you and your partner?

Each other! 😉 But really, our super intimate guest list made the evening so special. It was like a back yard party with all of our closest friends. But so many of the details above were extra special editions.

“Give thanks to Him and praise His name.” Psalm 100:4 . It’s been a year of epic adventures and dreams coming true. My heart is overwhelmed with gratitude. Coming up on 7 months of marriage already & so thankful I get to call this man my husband, & thankful he chose me to be his wife! 💕 . Hoping everyone had a very special Thanksgiving! Who’s ready to switch gears & get into the Christmas spirit?! 🙋‍♀️ Meeeee!!!

How did you find your filmmaker Sculpting With Time and what made you choose them?

Heather of Amorolgy showed Sculpting With Time’s work to us, and it didn’t even take us a moment more to pull the trigger and ask them to be a part of our day!

What is your favorite moment from your wedding film?

It is honestly impossible to answer this. Every single second of it brings back all of the emotions, and fills my eyes with super happy tears. We love that we get to re-live this day together. They caught every single emotion of the whole day. The music, the transitions, the captures. It is one thing that we will have forever and will continually be so incredibly cherished! We love that we get to watch our wedding film and feel like we re-lived our day in just a few minutes!
