How did you meet and fall in love?
Steven and I first met in elementary school. We had mutual friends all throughout elementary, middle, and high school. We spoke on occasion, but we were both so shy growing up. After high school, we enjoyed our own lives and never saw each other. We both went to college, started our careers, and by some act of fate, fell into each others lives again. I was in advertising, looking for someone to teach me web design. He had gone to school for graphic design and played around in web design. I was searching for clients to pitch new ad ideas to, and found a coffee roaster that I loved. I was curious as to who made their site, and I saw “Designed by Steven Gaffin.” So, I found him on Facebook that day—he messaged me that night, and we went out for our first date that weekend. We haven’t been apart since.
Tell us how the proposal happened.
Steven has been a Harry Potter fan since he was a kid. When we first started dating, I made fun of him for it because I had never watched them. After a weekend marathon of all the movies, I became a fan and was dying to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando. We planned the trip six months after we started dating for our one-year anniversary. While there, Steven asked me to take some night photos with light photography, where you write words with a light. He set it up, had me do a test shot, then he went to do his photo. I wasn’t watching him, so when the camera was generating the photo, he ran around behind me while I was looking at the back of it. When it popped up, it said “Marry me?” and I turned around to him down on one knee. It was the best, most unexpected moment of my life.
One year ago today, Steven asked me to go do some light painting while we were in Orlando. Little did I know, the words he wrote would make for my favorite photograph of all time. @stevengaffin you are THE perfect person for me and I couldn't imagine a more perfect or creative way to be proposed to. I love you dooty boo. • • • #052515 #marryme #isaidyes #howheasked #proposal #photographers #southernweddings #featureityall #101616 #love #photogaffin #gaffinlove #universalmoments #shootandshare #thegaffinwedding
Tell us about something that was creative or unique to your wedding.
We had a Harry Potter-themed wedding. We also had a father-daughter choreographed dance. I wore my mother’s veil. My grandmother surprised me with the diamond necklace my grandfather gave her on their wedding day.
Describe the moment from your wedding day that stands out to you the most.
Besides saying I do with Steven… My grandmother giving me such a special gift in her diamond necklace that my grandfather gave her on her wedding day.
How did you find your wedding dress? Who designed it and how did you know it was the one?
I found it at an inventory sale. I went in for one that I had fallen in love with, but my mom had me try on a few others while we were there, and the second I put [my dress] on, I knew that everything I thought I wanted in a dress wasn’t true.
O N E Y E A R 💍 It's been an absolutely amazing year! We went on a few vacations, a couple of trips out of the country, one ER visit and an emergency surgery, added two dogs to our family, ate a lot of ice cream, and watched a lot of Netflix. • Right before our wedding, we got so many "words of encouragement" and "advice" about how this first year of marriage was hard and if you can make it through, you'll be set. • This is the worst thing you can say to a couple entering marriage. This advice immediately puts doubt and fear into a couples' mind when they should be excited to enter into such an amazing gift. I thought it would be hard and rough, but it has been the absolute best year of my life. • Marriage with your best friend is amazing. I get to smile & laugh every day with this man. • We give marriage two thumbs up & highly recommend it. 📷: @brittanyphotographs • • • #wedding #oneyear #anniversary #love
What made your wedding feel extra special to you and your partner?
It represented us so well–the special touches in every detail, like the food, which was our favorite tex-mex restaurant, and our drinks (we served Butter Beer).
How did you find your filmmaker and what made you choose them?
I worked with Bill from BC Weddings in advertising and around the time of our wedding, he was breaking into the wedding industry. I knew that he put his heart and soul into his work and that our wedding would be no different. And, boy, did he deliver.
What is your favorite moment from your wedding film?
The end, where Steven and I candidly hug at the end of our reception. I had no idea Bill was still filming, and to see that made my heart so happy.
Tell us the No. 1 piece of wedding planning advice you wish you would have known?
Someone told me to enjoy my wedding day and to not to worry when things went wrong. So, when I realized I had never asked anyone to cut the cake, I just asked the closest person to me to find someone. Or, when my shoes were the most uncomfortable style I could have picked, I threw on the toms I wore that morning instead. When I wanted to dance instead of walk around greeting people, I danced and let everyone come to me. It’s your day, and it goes by faster than you’d imagine, so enjoy it.
What do you think the “secret sauce” to your relationship is?
Laughter–no matter the day or conversation, we’re always laughing together. It can fix the dumbest fight and bring out the best smiles.
