From The Bride:

Ricky makes the BEST food. And making food for a big crowd is one of his favorite things to do. As such, his house was always the place people gathered for Saturday football – it was centrally located, big enough to hold a lot of people, and, most importantly, always full of Ricky’s good food! Apparently, my bright red corduroys and Georgia Bulldog top caught the eye of the die-hard Alabama Crimson Tide boy. Within a few weeks of hanging out, I knew this guy would either devastatingly break my heart, or be the greatest thing that ever happened to me. Thankfully, it was the latter! A couple months after we started hanging out, we had “the talk.” I was in my fourth year of medical school and was facing the residency match process. We agreed that if I didn’t match to a residency spot in Chattanooga (our hometown, and where we both lived at the time), that a long distance relationship probably wasn’t realistic at that point. BUT, if I did match, we would make it “official.” I traveled back to Memphis (the main campus of my medical school) for Match Day, and that morning was probably the most nervous I have ever felt…but when I opened my envelope, I read the words I had been hoping for – I called Ricky immediately, and simply said, “Well, hey there boyfriend.” He laughed and responded, “Well hey girlfriend!” Soon after, our budding relationship faced the ultimate test of my General Surgery residency…but three years later, I walked down the aisle to meet that man. A man whose eye I first caught with my Georgia gameday outfit. A man who I love despite his allegiance to the wrong team, enough so that I gave him a beautiful gray houndstooth bow tie for our wedding! He will always yell “Roll Tide!” and I will always scream “Go Dawgs!’, and we’ll both always know who’s right 😉

We really did have a lot of fun planning our wedding. I had dreamed my whole life of a big wedding packed with family and friends – of a beautiful ceremony in my church, and a reception with delicious food, fantastic music, and the party of a lifetime. Lucky for me, my groom had the same vision for a wedding. Each little detail was important to us, but we always tried to step back and look at the big picture – it was important to us that the true meaning of the day be the focal point of this big celebration. We were so lucky to have a great support group around us as we planned the big day. We kept many things traditional…no ‘first look’; traditional white wedding cake and a chocolate grooms cake; beautiful hymns in our ceremony that had special meanings; elegant matching bridesmaid dresses and traditional black tuxes. But we made sure to make it our own – beautiful calla lilies that our brothers walked down the aisle and placed in seats during the “Seating of the Grandparents” in memory of our grandparents; traditional vows, with some slightly more modern words thrown in that really captured how we felt about the day; and a modern reading during our ceremony that we had both fallen in love with the first time we read it.

Our wedding, like our love story, was very much ‘us.’ It was exactly what we wanted, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing! Much like our life together, not every little thing was perfect or played out exactly as we thought it would, but that’s what made it even better than we could have imagined. Now if we could just go on a honeymoon EVERY year!
