Emily had lived in a two family house for 2 years before I moved in upstairs. When we had our first interaction discussing the internet bill that I may have been late on, we were almost inseparable. We spent a lot of nights playing Just Dance, bowling, and walking to the neighborhood dive bar, Tick Tock Tavern, to drink gin and tonics. Emily got back from a two month trip to Europe and we knew that there was much more than just a friendship between us. I then asked Emily to be my girlfriend and not too long after we traveled to Portland, Oregon where I asked her to marry me. (You can see our trip video that also includes the proposal here: https://vimeo.com/203127334)

When it came to planning our wedding, there were no questions asked that we wanted to elope – just us, photographers (Vein + Vessel), and filmmakers (White in Revery). We decided to travel to Joshua Tree since we had never been before and Vein + Vessel and White in Revery were just as eager to join us. Other than wanting to take rad photos and video all around the park, and to say our vows at sunset, there was honestly no set plan for the day. We woke up, drank our coffee as the sun rose, made breakfast together, and then got ready for a day of exploring. With walkie-talkies in hand to communicate with White in Revery driving behind us, we ventured out into Joshua Tree radioing each other every time we noticed a spot to jump out and take photos and video. As the sun was starting to descend, we were in a location that while breathtaking, wasn’t exactly the backdrop we hoped for to say our vows. We quickly jumped back in our cars, drove maybe 5 minutes down the road, and “this is it.” was heard over the walkie talkies. As we turned the corner, our hill-blocked view opened up into an expansive vista of nothing but joshua trees in the valley. Right as the sun began to set we found one lone wildflower, laid down our rug next to it, and said our vows. Nothing in the world will ever top that moment.

Our advice to future married partners is to be present on your day. As wedding filmmakers ourselves (okay, might as well shout us out: www.filmsbyjuniper.com) we have seen how the many details and routines of a more traditional wedding can get in the way of realizing that the day is for you and your partner to celebrate your love. We know that our day wasn’t the most traditional, but our goal was to make it the least amount stressful on us and take in every single moment.

Make your wedding day like any other fun day with your partner, but this time you just happen to be getting married!
