We met through, as cliche as it sounds, divine intervention. When each of our plans to play sports in college unexpectedly came to an end, we both ended up at our last resort school. Neither of us were particularly thrilled about landing in Chattanooga. Things started looking up when each of us saw the other from afar. After months of secret admiration and ridiculously awkward interactions, we finally managed to hold a normal conversation with each other. We went on a coffee date that was expected to last an hour or so but turned into staying up and talking until 5 am. We learned about our families, passions, talents and shared love of Jesus. Each of us knew that night that this would be far more than just a coffee date.

Fast forward a couple of years and we were engaged and entering into the process of planning our wedding! As we talked through what was most important to us a few key ideas came to mind. First, we wanted our wedding to exude community. We strayed away from formalities and sought out ways to make our venue feel like a reunion of friends. Next, the celebration was more than just us. Of course it was us actually getting married but we wanted to our people to feel celebrated too! Being surrounded by those who have shaped us, we wanted them to feel loved. Finally, the main goal of the day was to honor our King throughout every moment.

We were given so much good advice entering in to our wedding and have loved getting to pass that on to loved ones. A few of the most helpful ones for us…
– Enjoy the process. YOU’RE GETTING MARRIED. Think about how incredible that is. There will be stresses, sure. But, do not lose sight of the amazing journey you are on with your best friend.
– Have a checklist of the MOST important things you want remembered/known on your day (remembering to grab something or making sure special items aren’t lost), and give it to someone you trust. In the [amazing] chaos of the day, it’s really easy for things to get overlooked or lost, and this would be a great way to prevent that!
– Take (at least) one gap day between your wedding and honeymoon. We were married on Saturday and took Sunday to run errands and prepare for our Monday morning flight. Having this day to prep is amazing to finish up any last minute tasks but you couldn’t believe the fun you will have reflecting on what has just happened together.

Delight in the planning process. Be patient with those around you. Don’t forget the weight and beauty of what you are doing. Drink it all in. People say it goes by fast – it is wildly true.
