We routinely hear from couples who are looking for inspiration when it comes to incorporating loved ones into their ceremony, so we’re fortunate to be able to share Michaela and John’s wedding film with you guys. Michaela’s mom passed away from breast cancer just before she and John began dating. Wanting to feel her mom’s presence on her wedding day, Michaela had a heart from her mother’s denim jacket sewn into her dress, her mother’s wedding ring fastened to her bouquet, and a framed photo of her mother in the room where she got ready. Her father and uncle also planned a special ceremony moment for Michaela in honor of her mom, which you can watch starting at 0:14. 7th Floor Media does an amazing job of capturing each of the thoughtful tributes. Watch the full film below and then read on for our interview with Michaela.
How did you meet and fall in love?
My sister is married to my husband’s best friend. They tried to get us together for years until one day, they finally made it happen. I immediately fell in love with his laugh and his ability to make everyone around him smile- and we’ve been inseparable ever since!
Tell us how the proposal happened.
Born and raised in the country, John proposed to me under the stars in the corn field behind his parent’s house. We were watching a movie in the bed of his pickup truck, filled with pillows and blankets and candles when he got down on one knee and pulled out the ring of my dreams. After saying yes, he brought out chilled champagne and two glasses he had hidden in the field earlier that day. It was straight magic!
What products and/or vendors made your wedding so beautiful?
First and foremost, Steve (7th Floor Media) did an amazing job with our video, he was by far our favorite vendor to work with, and we were most pleased with his work! Our florist and decorator from Your Perfect Day LLC did an amazing job as well!
Tell us about something that was creative or unique to your wedding.
My mom passed away from breast cancer just before John and I started dating. To remember her, I had a heart from her denim jacket sewn into my dress, her wedding ring on my bouquet so she could hold my hand as well down the aisle, we got ready with a picture of her on her wedding day the whole morning. My dad and uncle (our pastor) surprised us with her name on a rock as part of our unity ceremony that was all about the people who helped us “build our foundation”. We also used my parents wedding glasses from their weddings for our toasts. I was also able to wear my dad’s wedding present to my mom on their wedding day- an opal necklace. It was such a special day, where even though she wasn’t there physically, she was still there in every other aspect.
Describe the moment from your wedding day that stands out to you the most.
My sisters’ speeches and my brother in law’s speech were one of the biggest highlights from the day. They were both hilarious!
How did you find your wedding dress? Who designed it and how did you know it was ~the one~?
I always knew I wanted long sleeves, and I’ve always loved lace. I tried it on and knew it was everything I’ve been dreaming of since I was a little girl! I got it from Wendy’s Bridal in Columbus, OH. They were amazing to work with!
What made your wedding feel extra special to you and your partner?
It’s so humbling to be surrounded by so many people you love and care about in one room. The whole day was perfect and went smoothly, and at the end of the day, I was married to my best friend. What could make the day any more special than that?!
How did you find your filmmaker, 7th Floor Media, and what made you choose them?
Through word of mouth, I know several people who used his services and I fell in love with his work. We actually didn’t have it in the budget to fit him in, so we paid for him by ourselves, and I wouldn’t change that for anything!
What is your favorite moment from your wedding film?
Our video does a good job at focusing on my mother, and honestly each time I watch it, it makes me cry again. The whole thing is just so perfect.
What do you think the ~secret sauce~ to your relationship is?
John and I are very passive people. We don’t fight a lot but we continue to work on our communication with one another. We don’t ever want to stop dating each other, no matter how comfortable we are, and most importantly, God is at the center of our relationship!
Finally, tell us the #1 piece of wedding planning advice you wish you would have known, or that you found to be the most helpful.
Try to enjoy each moment of your special day. Before you know it, the day will have passed and you’re starting your new life. It’s such a long time coming of planning and stressing, but make sure you are surrounded by the people that mean the most to you, because they are the biggest part of the memories you take from that day.
